The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Saint Joseph Noir and S. Giuseppe Nero. It could possibly be identical to the Abbuoto variety, but this is not based on DNA analyses. The variety is quite common in central and southern Italy. In 2016, 82 hectares of vines were reported (Kym Anderson statistics).
