Robertson

Wine-growing area (district) in South Africa that belongs to the Breede River Valley region. It lies in the form of a semi-circular oasis as a basin around the Breede River. The area borders the Klein Karoo region to the north-east. Robertson is divided into the nine wards of Agterkliphoogte, Bonnievale, Boesmansrivier, Eilandia, Hoopsrivier, Klaasvoogds, Le Chasseur, McGregor and Vinkrivier. The vineyards cover around 14,000 hectares of vines on calcareous, sandy alluvial soils. Two thirds of them are planted with the white wine varieties Colombard, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat d'Alexandrie and Sémillon, and one third with the red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz (Syrah), Merlot, Ruby Cabernet, Pinotage, Cinsaut and Pinot Noir.
