Wine-growing region (also Little Karoo) in South Africa, stretching in an elongated form from the Breede River Valley region adjoining to the west to the coast of the Indian Ocean. The name Karoo is of Hottentot origin and derives from "kurú" (dry), which refers to the hot, dry climate with little rainfall. The region includes the districts of Calitzdorp and Langeberg-Garcia, as well as the five non-district Wards of Montagu, Outeniqua, Tradouw, Tradouw Highlands and Upper Langkloof. The area is famous for its ostrich farms and sheep farming. In this extremely dry area with very little rainfall, viticulture is only possible with artificial irrigation. The wine route "Route 62", which runs 850 km from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, runs through the area.
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
