The island group of the Azores (port. Ilhas dos Açores) is located in the central Atlantic, 1,369 km west of the Europe mainland (Cabo da Roca) and 1,930 km from North America (Newfoundland). It is an autonomous region of Portugal and thus belongs to the European Union. The Azores consist of nine larger and some smaller volcanic islands with a total area of 2,351 km². The main island is São Miguel with the capital Ponta Delgada, the others are Corvo, Faial, Flores, Graciosa, Pico, Santa Maria, São Jorge, and Terceira. Southeast of it lies the island group of Madeira, which also belongs to Portugal, and south of it are the Canary Islands belonging to Spain.
