Abbreviation for "Protected Geographical Indication", the second highest wine quality level within the EU for country wines since 2009. This form is used in England, in English-speaking countries and also internationally. The highest quality level is called PDO = "Protected Designation of Origin" (protected designation of origin) for quality wine. See in detail under Quality System.

Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
