French term (négociant = trader, éleveur = farmer, grower, breeder) for a producer or trader who buys grapes or wines, processes them in his cellar, bottles them and markets them under his own name or trademark. In Champagne, the protected term Négociant manipulant (NM) is used instead, but the procedure is identical. See also under Négociant, Bordeaux wine trade and Wine trade.
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
