The exact origin of this white grape variety is unknown; it originated in the Mediterranean region, possibly in Greece. Synonyms with a reference to "grey" are Grauer Muskateller, Grauroter Muskateller and Grizzly Frontignan. It is probably a very old variety. It is a somatic mutation of the white grape variety Muscat Blanc with pink to reddish berry colour. In the VIVC catalogue, however, it is not listed as an independent variety with this name, but as a synonym for the variety Muscat Rouge (with a somewhat darker berry colour). All the different coloured Muscat varieties are genetically identical. See also under Muscat.
There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
