The parliamentary republic of Mongolia in East Asia with its capital Ulaanbaatar covers 1,564,116 km². With only around three million inhabitants, Mongolia is the most sparsely populated country in the world. The landlocked country is bordered by Russia to the north and China to the south. The homeland of Genghis Khan (1162-1227) was part of the Qing Empire (Manchu Dynasty), i.e. part of China, for over 200 years before independence. With the collapse of the Qing dynasty in 1911, Mongolia declared its independence in 1911 and became independent in 1921.

There is no viticulture, but there are wild vines. The most popular alcoholic beverages include rice wine and the wine-like Airak (Airag), a fermented mare's milk with an alcohol content of around 5% by volume. The red grape variety Saperavi Severny was bred in Russia from a local variety of the species Vitis amurensis.
