Famous winery in the South African wine-growing region of Constantia (see there in detail the history). It was part of the original Constantia farm of Governor Simon van der Stel (1639-1712). After his death, the estate was divided into three parts: Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia and Bergvliet (today Buitenverwachting) and sold. In the 18th century, especially the sweet wines attained cult status and were served at all European ruling houses. The decline of the estate began around 1860 due to mildew and phylloxera. At the beginning of the 20th century production came to an end. In 1980 a new start was made by the owners Duggie and Lowell Jooste. The vineyards cover 72 hectares. They are planted with the red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Shiraz(Syrah), and with the white wine varieties Muscat Frontignan(Muscat Blanc), Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Since 1986, the "Vin de Constance", a sweet wine with a high alcohol content, has been produced there, trying to build on the success of the legendary Constantia. It is harvested late, but not vinified. Another top product is the red wine "Marlbrook" in Bordeaux style (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc). Over half a million bottles of wine are produced annually.
