La Rioja (Argentinien)

Wine-growing region in Argentina; to the west of it lies the Catamarca region. Although it is historically the oldest region, it has rather less importance for viticulture. This is concentrated in the small irrigated mountain valleys in the west between the "Sierras de Velasco" in the east and the "Sierra de Famatina" classified as DO in the west. The vineyards cover about 7,000 hectares of vines, the largest part of the vineyards with about 70% is located around the small town of Chilecito. The white wine varieties Torrontés Riojano (with about 50% of the area), Torrontés Sanjuanino and Muscat d'Alexandrie predominate. Other varieties are the light red Cereza, Criolla Chica and Criolla Grande, from which white or light red consumer wines are made. Red wines play a minor role and are mainly produced from the Italian varieties Barbera and Bonarda. One of the most important producers is the Cooperativa La Riojana winegrowers' cooperative.
