Former vineyard in the municipality of Dürnstein in the wine-growing region Wachau (Lower Austria). The name indicates the Steep slope of the slope. The vineyard located above the garden hotel "Pfeffel" is no longer cultivated today. In the 1950s, the then "Wachau Wine Cooperative" - now Domäne Wachau - had the name protected and produced the Brand wine "Dürnsteiner Katzensprung" for a long time. Today, under the designation "Wachauer Katzensprung", wines are produced from grapes that can come from the entire Wachau region. The same applies to the brand "Wachauer Himmelstiege" owned by Domäne Wachau.
A "Dürnsteiner Katzensprung" Vintage 1954 contributed to Austrian history. During the final negotiations for the state treaty in Moscow (Russia), the Austrian delegation brought a Katzensprung as a guest gift. In connection with the signing of the state treaty on May 15, 1955, "Dürnsteiner Katzensprung", "Dürnsteiner Flohhaxn", "Poysdorf Saurüssel", and "Krems Schmidt" were official banquet wines. In the evening at Schönbrunn Palace, Riesling Dürnsteiner Hollerin was served. In the weeks leading up to this, the then Austrian Foreign Minister Leopold Figl (1902-1965) received high-ranking guests from politics and diplomacy multiple times at the Baroque jewel "Kellerschlösschen" at the foot of the Kellerberg (Riede Österreich). Figl had a key to this cellar and the "Dürnsteiner Katzensprung". There are still a few original bottles of this wine today.
I have great respect for the scope and quality of the wein.plus encyclopaedia. It is a unique place to go for crisp, sound information on terms from the world of wine.
