Abbreviation for 'International Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysys'. The most striking quality feature of sugar is its colour, which can range from an almost pure white to yellow-brown. In order to classify the reflection color of white sugar, ICUMSA has defined a color type scale that ranges from 0 to 6. Color type 0 corresponds to a sugar of lowest coloration, color type 6 to a strongly colored sugar. This standard has recently been used in Germany to determine the sugar content in grape must and resulted in a new orientation for the Oechsle grades with respect to must weight (Oechsle).
