Grainhübel

single vineyard in the municipality of Deidesheim (Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of Pfalz. It was first mentioned in documents as a vineyard "an der Gryne" as early as 1412. The name most likely refers to the soil. It is either derived from "Grain", an old term for soil that has been washed away, or from "Grien" for a soil covered with gravel and small stones. The "Hübel" stands for "hill". The site already had an excellent reputation at the beginning of the 19th century and was described by the well-known viticultural expert Johann Philipp Bronner (1792-1864) as the best Deidesheim site. The former individual parts of oberer Grain, Grain Chaussee, Grainhübel and unterer Grain were combined under the present name during the land consolidation in 1971. The south-facing vineyard at an altitude of 110 to 150 metres above sea level covers almost six hectares of vineyards on weathered red sandstone soil partly interspersed with clay and lime. Here, mainly the Riesling variety is cultivated. The Bassermann-Jordan, Kimich, Siben and Weingut von Winning wineries, for example, have shares in the site.
