A scientific society based in Wiesbaden with currently around 800 members from Germany and German-speaking countries. The tasks and aims are: The Society for the History of Wine has two aims which stand side by side in harmony in its statutes, but at the same time have the relationship of cause and effect. It aims to deepen general historical awareness through research into the history of wine. This objective reflects the certainty that wine culture is a part of Western history, which is not limited to the past, but also has something essential to give to our present. Any friend of wine can become a member of the society.
Those who are willing to contribute to the scientific research of the Society are particularly welcome to join. These include the history of wine and sparkling wine among the various peoples, the customs surrounding wine, motivic representations of wine and the grape, legislation surrounding wine and many other areas in which wine has gained significance in connection with human life and action. The research results are made available to the members in the Schriften zur Weingeschichte, which they receive free of charge.
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
