Lucian W. Dressel, a winegrower and vine breeder from the state of Missouri, is considered one of the American wine pioneers of modern times. He studied oenology at the University of California at Berkeley under Dr. Harold Paul Olmo (1909-2006). Dressel was the owner of the Mount Pleasant Winery in St. Charles County (Missouri), founded in 1859. He was one of the pioneers for the rebirth and quality boom of the Missouri wine industry in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1976 produced an ice wine. Together with his two winemaking colleagues, Millard Cohen and Howard Nason, he was instrumental in the first AVA classification of Augusta in 1980.
