In 2002 Dorli Muhr and Dirk Niepoort founded the winery "Muhr-van der Niepoort" in the community of Prellenkirchen in the Carnuntum wine-growing region (Lower Austria). After her interpreting studies in 1991, Dorli Muhr founded the agency Wine&Partners, which today handles communications for companies and culinary projects all over the world. In 2004, she founded a group of quality-sorted winegrowers, who defined criteria for the use of the origin "Spitzerberg" and support each other. Dirk Niepoort is the owner of Niepoort Vinhos, a port wine house founded in 1842 and based in Porto (Portugal). In 2019 Dorli Muhr took over the 50% shares of her former partner. Since 2017, the winery has been operating under the name "Dorli Muhr". Lukas Brandstätter is responsible as oenologist.
The vineyards cover 12 hectares on the Spitzerberg with pure limestone soil and extremely dry windy conditions. The areas on the Spitzerberg have been designated as a prime location by the Association of Traditional Austrian Wine Estates. They are planted with the red wine varieties Blaufränkisch (80%) and Syrah (10%) and Grüner Veltliner (10%). The heart of the estate is a small revitalized plot of 0.17 hectares on the Rote Erde reed beds at Spitzerberg, which had been owned by her grandmother Katharina Muhr since 1912. Since the 2018 vintage, the vineyard has been cultivated according to the certified rules of organic viticulture. In order to increase quality, the yields are greatly reduced through appropriate measures.
All wines are fermented spontaneously with yeasts from the vineyard or cellar. The white wines are aged in stainless steel tanks, the red wines mature for two years in traditional large wooden barrels. Premium wines are the three Blaufränkisch wines Ried Spitzerberg, Liebkind Ried Kobeln and Samt&Seide Prellenkirchen. Around 35,000 bottles of wine are produced annually, 75% of which are pure Blaufränkisch. About one quarter is sold in Austria, three quarters are exported worldwide. These are USA, Great Britain, Ireland, Belgium, Holland, Portugal, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Russia, Germany, Switzerland, Thailand and Australia. The winery is a member of Die Rubin Carnuntum Weingüter und Traditionsweingüter Österreich.
