Cobb Wines

Californian marine biologist David Cobb became a winemaker in an unusual way. During a professional stay in Saudi Arabia, he produced a wine there from Austrian grape juice. After returning to California, he planted Pinot Noir vines in the backyard of his house. Finally, in 1989, he founded Coastlands Vineyard in Occidental, Sonoma County. He was one of the first winemakers to grow Pinot Noir here on what was then five acres of vines. At the time, his son Ross was studying biology at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He helped his father out in the summer and took a great liking to viticulture. He switched to environmental science and continued his studies in agroecology and sustainable agriculture. After graduating in 1993, he worked at several wineries, including Bonny Doon Vineyard and Williams Selyem as an oenologist. Ross Cobb expanded his knowledge through over ten visits to Burgundy, France, with contacts at over 100 wineries.
