The winery is located in Healdsburg in the Alexander Valley in Sonoma County , California ( North Coast region). It was founded in 1974 by Frank Woods and Thomas Reed. Initially it was to be called "Woods Vineyards", but Woods' children chose the original name "Clos du Bois" (French bois = forest, Clos du Bois = "Vineyard of the Woods"). After several changes of ownership, the winery was taken over by Constellation Brands in 2007 and has been part of the E. & J. Gallo Winery since 2019. Clos du Bois was named the official wine of the US Open tennis tournament in 2025.
The vineyards cover around 370 hectares of vines in the Alexander Valley. In addition, grapes are purchased from the AVA areas of Dry Creek Valley, Knights Valley, Los Carneros, Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast (all Sonoma County, North Coast), as well as from contract growers in Monterey(Central Coast). The red wine varieties Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir, Shiraz (Syrah), Tempranillo and Zinfandel as well as the white wine varieties Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Malvasia Bianca, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc are cultivated.
