Clauss Gustav

German-born Greek wine growing pioneer; see under Achaia Clauss.

The huge Greek wine trading and production company with its headquarters in the harbour town of Patras (with the appellation of the same name) is located in the north of the island of Peloponnese. The company was founded in 1859 by Gustav Clauss (1825-1908), an immigrant from Bavaria, who acquired 60 hectares of land. Initially, blackcurrants were cultivated. Two years later, Clauss founded a winery with his partner Jakob Klipfel, which he later continued to run alone. Together with Theodor Harburger, a wine trade was founded in 1872 to market their own wines. Achaia Clauss is considered the third oldest Greek company of modern times.

Demestica brand wine

From 1908, the company was a leader in the production of Mavrodaphne wines, including the best-known Greek branded wine Demestica.
