The white grape variety originates from France. Synonyms are Blanc Madame, Blanquette Grise, Clairette de Gascogne, Claret, Claret de Gascogne and Plan de Dame. It was first mentioned in 1840 under the name Plan de Dame in Rabastens in the southern département of Tarn.
