From an architectural point of view, a castle is a building or building complex that was built on behalf of the sovereign or other members of the nobility and was intended for use by noblemen, for example as a residence. It receives this designation regardless of the size or artistic design of its façade. Stately castles often emerged from medieval castle complexes, and some castles also emerged from former monasteries. The picture shows the Schloss Wackerbarth winery in Radebaul in the German wine-growing region of Saxony.
In the German-speaking world, however, the term is used as part of the name of a winery and usually precedes it. Firstly, it is associated with a certain quality and tradition. Historically, many of these houses owned vineyards, which implied a long history and often a high standard of wine production. These wineries in particular actually have castle-like buildings worthy of the name. The picture shows the Schloss Johannisberg winery in Geiisenheim-Johannisberg in the German wine-growing region of Rheingau.
