The winery is located in Parras de la Fuente in the south of the Mexican state of Coahuila. Its origins date back to 1568, when the Spanish conquistadors Fray Pedro de Espinareda and Francisco Cano explored the area of Patos and the Parras Valley in search of gold. Although they did not find any, an oasis with water sources and countless wild vines was discovered in the desert-like area. These discoveries motivated the Jesuits Jerónimo Ramírez, Francisco de Arista and Juan Agustín de Espinosa to found the mission of Santa María de las Parras and produce wine in the Parras Valley in 1594.
Don Lorenzo García recognised the great potential of this valley in 1595 and asked the Spanish King Philip II (1527-1598) to donate land. The governor, Diego Fernández de Velasco, granted Don Lorenzo García the royal favour of 19 August 1597, granting him land and permission to plant vines and produce wine and brandy (Libro de Las Mercedes). This is how the Bodega San Lorenzo was founded, where Casa Madero is located today. This makes it the oldest winery on the American continent that has been in continuous operation since its foundation to this day.
