The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Canèna, Canica, Canina, Canina Crossa, Canina dal Raspo, Canina di Forli, Canina di Lugo, Canina di Ravenna, Canina Picola Lunga, Cannina, Canucula and Uva Canina. In the VIVC and M.I.P.A.A.F vineyard registers, it is listed as an independent variety; but according to Wine Grapes, Canina Nera is identical to the Fortana variety. No stocks were reported under the name Canina Nera in 2016 (Kym Anderson).

Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
