The variety was discovered and selected by the German ampelographer Johann Philipp Bronner (1792-1864) in 1840 near Speyer in Rhineland-Palatinate in the forests along the Rhine. He named it Zaehringia nobilis according to his own classification system, after the old Swabian ruling dynasty of the Zähringers, and gave it the common name...
