Wine bell

Formerly cultivated custom to ring a bell (also beer bell, long bell, last bell) at a certain time of day. Mostly this took place between seven and nine o'clock in the evening. This was the sign of not being allowed to serve wine (alcohol) any more or even for locking the inns and asking the guests to go home. This was handled differently locally and was often limited to a certain period of the year. See also under customs in viticulture.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
