Term for the insufficient development or physiological disorder of the grapevine, which manifests itself in the uneven size and insufficient ripening of the berries (picture on the right). As a rule, the proportion of flowers that develop into berries is only 30 to 60% (flowering rate), depending on the grape variety, and the vine is unable to bring all the fruit to full ripeness. This is a manifestation of coulure (picture left), i.e. a fertilisation disorder. A completely different, qualitatively positive characteristic is "small berries", which produce better quality wines due to the smaller overall berry size and the higher ratio of skin to juice.
