prickly

Description (also pungent) for a wine in the context of a wine evaluation or a wine talk that indicates a wine defect. The impression is expressed by an unpleasantly pungent, biting or irritating impression that overlays other sensory characteristics and makes the wine appear inharmonious. The term always has negative connotations and is used exclusively to describe faulty developments.

Perception

The impression is perceived through smell and taste and is often accompanied by an unpleasant reverberation in the mouth. The term "pungent" does not describe an independent perception, but serves as a linguistic characterisation of this sensory impression. It is therefore not primarily a trigeminal stimulus, but an olfactory and gustatory sensory impression.
