Monorack railway

Designation for monorail rack-and-pinion railways for overcoming extreme gradients in rough terrain. The track consists of a square tube with a rack welded to the underside. The tube is mounted on supports a few metres apart. This means that monorack tracks take up relatively little space. They can overcome inclines of up to 45° (100%). Horizontal and vertical curves are possible up to a radius of four metres. They can therefore be flexibly and individually adapted to the topography. Monorack tractors with diesel, petrol or electric drive are used as vehicles. They can transport loads of up to 250 kg. The picture shows a Monorackbahm in the Calmont steep slope (Bremm, Mosel).
