The "International Austrian Wine Challenge" took place for the first time in Vienna(Austria) in 2004. The founder and inventor was the Viennese winery owner Michael Edlmoser. In the process, 4,126 wines from ten nations were evaluated. All wines are tasted anonymously (blind) in individual tasting booths at the Höhere Bundeslehranstalt und Bundesamt für Weinbau in Klosterneuburg and graded according to the international 100-point system. In each category (different grape varieties, predicates, fortified wines, sparkling wines) the wine with the highest number of points receives the "Austrian trophy".
