The history of this traditional noble family in the geographical area of today's Burgenland dates back to the 17th century. At that time, two family members were deputies of the kings of Hungary and the following generations of the princely line were also partisans and confidants of the House of Habsburg and held the highest offices. The battle of Lackenbach in September 1620 between Nikolaus Count Esterházy (1583-1645) and Transylvanian and Ottoman rebels is the origin of the story of the flag-waving, which is commemorated by the branded wine of the same name from the wine-growing community of Neckenmarkt.

In 1622, Emperor Ferdinand II (1578-1637) pledged the dominions of Eisenstadt and Forchtenstein to Count Nikolaus for 400,000 guilders in gratitude for his loyalty. This marked the beginning of his rise to become the most powerful magnate dynasty in the Hungarian crown. As the Emperor was unable to redeem the respective pledge, Forchtenstein became an Esterházy hereditary estate after further payments by Esterházy in 1626 and Eisenstadt in 1647.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
