Producer description of "Domaine de La Charbonnière"

The winery is located in the commune of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the area of the same name in the southern . The name is derived from "Carboniére", a popular term for charcoal burning, which was formerly practised in this area. The estate was founded in 1912 by Eugene Maret. His son Fernand enlarged the farm, which is now run by Michel Maret, the third generation of the family. The vineyards cover 17.5 hectares in the area and four hectares in the area (in Sarrians). Some hectares in the area were only replanted in 2006. Five different Châteauneuf-du-Papes are produced. These are CdP in red (70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre), CdP in white (40% Roussanne, 40% Grenache Blanc, 20% Bourboulenc and Clairette), CdP Cuvée Mourre des Perdrix (50-year-old vines, 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah), CdP Cuvée Vieilles Vignes (80-year-old vines, 95% Grenache, 5% Mourvèdre) and CdP Les Hautes Brusquières Cuvée Spéciale (60% Grenache, 40% Syrah). The wines are aged for different lengths of time (8 to 18 months) in large barrels (foudres) and in barriques and bottled without filtration.
