The 19th district is located in the north-west of Vienna on the edge of the Vienna Woods. The district was formed in 1892 from the former Viennese suburbs of Unterdöbling, Oberdöbling, Grinzing, Heiligenstadt, Nußdorf, Josefsdorf, Sievering and the Kahlenbergerdorf. The district was then expanded in 1938 to include the cadastral communities of Neustift am Walde and Salmannsdorf, which previously belonged to the 18th municipal district of Währing. The Danube forms the border between Döbling and the 21st municipal district Floridsdorf, the Danube Canal to the 20th municipal district Brigittenau. Around 15% of the district area is agricultural land, with winegrowing around Grinzing, Nußdorf, Sievering, Neustift am Walde and Salmannsdorf playing the largest role. This is also expressed in the district coat of arms with the grape in the centre.
