Area classified as cru (peak appellation) in the northern section of the Rhône on the left bank. The vineyards cover 1,300 hectares of vineyards in eleven communes in the Drôme department. The wines are similar to those of the Hermitage area to the north, but are considered to be simpler and lighter in comparison to these. The red wines are made from the Syrah variety and a maximum of 15% Marsanne or Roussanne, the white wines from the Marsanne and Roussanne varieties. A well-known lover of wines was the locally famous bandit Mandrin. Well known producers are Albert Belle, Chapoutier, Bernard Chave, Domaine du Colombier, Château de Curson, Desmeure, Domaine des Entrefaux, Fayolle, Alain Graillot, Jaboulet-Aîné and Domaine du Pavillon-Mercurol.
