Cross disk

Designation for the device for closing the bunghole of a barrel in preparation for transport or dispatch. These discs, which are mostly made of solid wood, have a conical shape (the surface below has a smaller circumference) and therefore cannot slip into the barrel unintentionally. For better sealing, a so-called bung cloth made of canvas is used, which is placed over the bunghole and only then the transverse disc is driven in. A so-called barrel plate is placed over it and fastened (nailed down) to secure it. In the past, the barrel was closed before transport by the master of wine making. See also under barrel types.

Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
