Clear from wine

Common German term for a grape spirit made from grape mash that has not been matured in oak barrels and is therefore "clear" (uncoloured) compared to a brandy. In the case of a designation "clear", the distillate could also have been distilled from other starting products. See also under Brandy, Distillation and Spirit.
