The winery is located in the municipality of Traben-Trarbach (Bernkastel area) in the German wine-growing region of Mosel. The origins of this traditional business date back to 1623 with the founding of the "Handlungs- und Wechselcomptoir" by the Böcking family. There was trade in coffee, tea, silk, spices, tobacco and wine, as well as banking. Winegrowing began through the purchase of vineyards in the course of the secularisation rigorously carried out by Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). It was decided to concentrate on Riesling and the estate acquired an excellent reputation. In 1792, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a guest of the family and praised the Riesling wine. After ten successful generations, Adolph Böcking died in 1903. After that, valuable vineyards were lost. The Trarbach sites remained in the family, but the quality standard could not be maintained.
