The winery is located in the municipality of Ayegui, southwest of Pamplona, at the foot of Montejurra near the small town of Estella in the northern Spanish region of Navarre. The original vineyards were donated to the "Monasterio de Santa María la Real de Irache" by King Sancho IV of Navarre (1039-1076) in 1072. The Benedictine monastery, which was closed in the 19th century, is located on the Camino Francés of the Way of St. James and was an important pilgrim hostel in the Middle Ages. The winery still cultivates the old custom, practised since then, of offering wine to pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela from a "Fuente del Vino" (wine fountain). Every day, 70 litres of wine are provided with the request for "economical consumption", yet many pilgrims go empty-handed. The wine museum contains many bottles of wine from famous vintages.
