The winery or estate is located in the municipality of Echauri (Etxauri) eight kilometres from Pamplona in the Navarre region of northern Spain. The circular estate covers a total of 319 hectares of land on a single plot. The Señorío de Otazu (manor house) and its buildings date back to the 12th century. Since then, vines have been cultivated in the county of Otazu by Cistercian monks. The King of Navarre, Carlos III "El Noble" (1361-1425) drank the wines produced in Otazu. The old winery, with 60 hectares of vines at the time, was built in 1840. The Romanesque church of San Esteban (12th century), the dovecote defence tower (14th century) and the Renaissance palace (16th century) have been preserved and have all been fully restored.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
