The white grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Albarolla, Calcatella, Çimixâ, Cimixario, Frate Pelato, Genovese (2nd main name), Genovisello, Genoese Blanc, Gernuai Fehér, Ghienuvese, Gianchetta, Jenuvese, Raisin Genois, Rossala Bianca, Scarsafoglia, Scimiscià, Simixa, Uva Calcatella, Uva Gnuese and White Genoese.

The parentage (parentage) is unknown. The variety named Scimiscià in DOC regulations is genetically identical. Bianchetta Genovese must not be confused with the Albarola or Bianchetta Trevigiana varieties due to some of the same synonyms or morphological similarities.
The late-ripening vine is moderately susceptible to fungal diseases, especially downy mildew, powdery mildew and botrytis, but is resistant to extreme weather conditions. It produces light white wines with a moderate alcohol content and fresh acidity with a neutral flavour, which are mainly used for blends.
It is cultivated in the Italian region of Liguria and is authorised in the DOC areas of Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino and Val Polcèvera, as well as in the IGT areas of Colline del Genovesato, Colline Savonesi and Liguria di Levante. However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
