Alkaeus

The Greek poet Alcaeus (also known as Alkaios or Alkaeus) lived on the island of Lesbos in the 7th century BC. Alongside Sappho, he was the main representative of Aeolian poetry and wrote true-to-life battle, love and drinking songs in a new verse metre (Alcaeusian verse). He was a model for the two poets Gaius Valerius Catullus and Horace. The famous saying In vino veritas (In wine is truth) probably originates from Alcaeus.
