The Roman poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65-8 BC) received a comprehensive education in Greek and Roman literature. As a young scribe, he met Vergil and became a protégé of Emperor Augustus (63 BC to 14 AD). His works are considered models of a perfected "golden" Latin, the term for the literary period from about 60 BC to 40 AD, during which Roman poetry and prose achieved the highest perfection in content, language, and form (other representatives included Julius Caesar, Cicero, and Vergil).
