The US authority " Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau" was created in 2003 from the former BATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives).
As a result of the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001, the Homeland Security Act was passed on 25 November 2002 and came into force on 24 January 2003. As part of this reorganisation, the previous tasks of the BATF were divided up. The tax and trade functions in the area of alcohol and tobacco were transferred to the Department of the Treasury as TTB, while the law enforcement functions were assigned to the Department of Justice as ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives).
