Whistles

Designation in the German Rheingau for a small serving measure (glass) of 0.1 litre of wine. It is derived (like the whistle in Austria) from the fact that this small quantity is like a short whistling sound (whistle) or can be enjoyed during its duration. But there are also the spellings Piffche or Piffchen. This is how tobacco pipes are called in Rhineland-Palatinate. The volume of the pipe bowl corresponds to the small amount of wine. See also under hollow dimensions.
