Weevil

The furrowed weevil (pictured left) belongs to the weevil family and is found in large parts of Europe, North America and Australia. This long-known insect is a significant pest of many plants, including vines. The flightless beetle is about one centimetre long, grey-black in colour and has a spatula-shaped elongated head with long, bent antennae, which gave it its name.

Larval stage

It overwinters as a beetle, prepupa or larva in the soil. The females, which live for two to three years, can develop up to 800 eggs in the course of their lives, which they lay on the surface of the soil close to the plant throughout the season. After one to three weeks, the ivory-coloured and brown-headed larvae, which are very similar to cockchafer grubs (picture right), hatch and attack the roots. This can lead to the death of the vines, which can have devastating consequences in young plants and vine nurseries.

Andreas Essl

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
