Wedding wine

Common name in Austria for the wine with which the bridegroom must buy himself off the fraternity of a place. Locally different this was paid either by the bride's father or the groom. This event usually took place the evening before the wedding. The groom has to "apologize" to the bride and groom that they did not get the chance to get the bride. This wine is also known as "Stichwein" or "Stupfwein" (the name for the execution of marriage), as well as "Gebührenwein". In some communities this ancient custom has been preserved. In former times there was also the so-called "Bahrrafa" (rafa = scuffle) - the fight for a pastry thrown out by the bride. See also under special wines.
