Commonly used name for the phylloxera (lat. "devastating/destructive louse", also Phylloxera vitifolii or Viteus vitifolii). In 1868, the eponym Jules Émile Planchon (1823-1888) erroneously assumed that the phylloxera was related to an insect on the cork oak, the "Phylloxera quercus". The correct Latin name "Dactylosphaera vitifolii" is rarely used because the old name has become established.
