Sine Qua Non

The winery is located in Oak View (Ventura County, Central Coast) south of Santa Barbara in California. The name means "absolutely indispensable". It was founded in 1994 by Manfred Krankl, an Austrian who emigrated to the USA in 1980, and his wife Elaine. Manfred was the managing partner of both "La Brea Bakery" and the gourmet temple "Campanile" until it was sold in 2001. The first wine was the "Queen of Spades" vintage 1994 from the Bien Nacido vineyard in the AVA area of Santa Maria Valley from Syrah grapes purchased at the time.

The 100 cases of the maiden vintage were quickly sold out, and today you have to pay up to 10,000 euros and more for the few remaining bottles. So-called garage wines, which are only sold in limited quantities, are produced in a perfectionist manner. Manfred Krankl owns the winery together with his wife Elaine and acts as head winemaker. Elaine is responsible for marketing, sales and label design.
