Simonsig

The vineyard "Simonsig Family Vineyards" is located at the foot of the Simonsberg in the South African wine-growing district of Stellenbosch . The name means "Simons View". The age-old family winery was founded by the Malan family, who immigrated from France in 1688. Frans Malan built the winery into one of the largest wineries in the country over a period of 30 years. He was also one of the founders of the "Stellenbosch Wine Route" in 1971. Today, the winery is run by his three sons Johann (cellar), Francois (vineyard) and Pieter (marketing). The vineyards cover 205 hectares. They are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Pinotage, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz. Around 20 different wines are produced, half in red and half in white. The premium wines include "Frans Malan" (Pinotage), the Beerenauslese "Vin de Liza" (named after the mother of the three brothers), the Bordeaux-style red wine cuvée "Tiara", the single-vineyard wine "Redhill" (Pinotage) and a Chardonnay. Kaapse Vonkel" was the first sparkling wine produced in South Africa according to the méthode cap classique (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with a little Pinot Meunier and Pinotage). Every year, 160,000 cases of wine are produced, some of which are exported to 20 countries.
