Designation for the old profession of a "wine loader" with enormous importance. The Middle High German "schröten" means "to drag" or "to pull". The task was to transport the full wine casks from the wine cellars onto carts and sometimes from there onto ships. In Rüdesheim, Schröter services were a civic duty and an office. The Schröter regulations in the Rheingau communities were not uniform. The Rüdesheim Schröterordnung had existed since the 14th century. It forbade the carrying of weapons at work and prescribed a decent way of life. The municipal council engaged suitable citizens for several years as "wine loader" and had one of them sworn in as Schrötermeister. The master had to ensure punctual and fair service, discipline and order among the smiths and correct accounting of the shot fees.
