Schnaps

Colloquial term for a spirit drink of any kind. There is no legal definition of this term in the EU Spirit Drinks Regulation. The word comes from Low German and is derived from "schnapp". This refers to the fact that a schnapps is usually drunk in one quick gulp from a small glass. The term is sometimes wrongly understood as negative. See also under distillation.
